KLM Holland Magazine: Vancouver

April 2012:

People head out for the evening around a statue of "Gassy" Jack Deighton, a seaman who opened the area's first saloon. Gastown is named after Deighton and is the oldest part of Vancouver; it was downtown's original core. Today Gastown is a National Historic Site of Canada and a popular place to see distinctive historic architecture while diving into Vancouver night life.
